The United States should not negotiate with terrorists.
As a world power, and the largest economy on earth, the United States of America needs clear, and strict ethical boundaries to how it receives and gives people, services, and products from or to other nations.
Mexico is a nation where terror, human rights violations, and abuse of the economic system predominates. I won’t go far enough as to say we deserve sanctions, but we have been slouching on some of the promises of NAFTA, like improving our human rights record, or our underemployment index, or to strengthen the rule of law.
Now, all of the above would be achievable in a binary world, in one where when the US looks away, Mexico has nowhere to go. A world where strict economic pressures can levy the sort of change that vitalizes
a stagnant nation, rather than just hurt the most vulnerable groups within it
.
Trump just shot himself in the foot, because if he imposes tariffs in ten days, he will just piss off American consumers, companies, and one of the closest allies it has, while not actually solving any of the problems bringing illegal immigrants into the US.
I can’t predict what will happen; maybe we retaliate with tariffs, maybe we sit down and take charge, once again, of the US’ dirty work at our southern border. Allowing the sort of human suffering that might cover an entire chapter of a middle school level history book.
Mexico needs to change, and we need consequences for not following international law when we’re given international benefits. The thing is; the consequences of scolding us ripple far beyond our borders, when done incorrectly they only serve to worsen the lives of everyone.
The United States should not negotiate with terrorists, but it must be able to recognize when not to attack them.

Related points:
The US has no problem with suffering as long as it’s inside someone else’s border. Case in point: Puerto Rico bond crisis. Puerto Rico SHOULD be a US state, but it’s more convenient to use it as a punching bag. Never expect compassion from the US no matter who is in charge at the time. Your internal problems are good for business.
American politics are all about blame - not action. Most “actions” are just a way of showing blame. True action is too hard in this political system.
The US is surprisingly resilient. In a matter of a decade, the US went from under the heel of OPEC to the #1 oil producer in the world. The US gets what it wants.

It depresses me greatly that in 2016, of the three major contenders, the only free-market candidate was Clinton, while the other two ran from two extremes of fucking over workers from countries that are major trade partners.
Socially, I’d never be a Republican, but I could at least respect them on issues like trade. Now? I just hope the Democrats will let me vote for a candidate who isn’t couching disastrous protectionist policies in bullshit leftist terms.

Reactions:
Whose business is it good for?
If blame carries “action”, then does the action or the blame matter more in the real world?
Increasingly, lately, so does China.

It and populism are rising everywhere. It’s a reaction to decades of unfettered globalism, but hopefully it won’t end as badly as the last time the world learned that they’re shit ideologies.

Long game: by making America worse off, fewer people will want to come here.
It’s genius if you think about it.

“The US has no problem with suffering as long as it’s inside someone else’s border.”
Most Americans don’t give two shits about suffering within their own own borders, either.
And America isn’t “surprisingly” resilient. We are a sole world power bordered by two oceans, two friendly nations and filled with natural resources. We also invented nuclear weapons and are the only people crazy enough to actually use them. If anything, we’ve become underachievers.

It’s genuinely shocking how many people discount all of those things. People who think the US should pull out of a global military alliance that literally exists to further the country’s interests seem to have a very dangerous conception of how much of the US’ fate is divinely determined.

American business. The only way to stay on top is to make sure others are below you.

Could be worse, Kim Jong Un just had five high-ranking officials executed for displeasing him at the Hanoi summit.
What’s sad though , I honestly believe Trump would do the same if he could.

Yep — last thing I read was that several years since then have seen a net migration TO Mexico and not into the US from Mexico. Some of those are US expats, but a lot are tradesmen returning home to a more stable construction market. Either way, the whole immigration debate is overcooked. I have yet to read a single mainstream article that discusses immigration vs the low birth rate in the US. Between fewer children and our collective sense of entitlement, it’s no wonder so many semi-skilled jobs have been handed over to people willing to do them.
(Note: This is not excusing illegal immigration, I’m just saying it’s a symptom and not an isolated problem that needs solving with a wall, or with mass detentions)
